Here are some tips and tricks to get you through hell...

As finals season approaches, you are mentally preparing yourself for the all-nighters, the malnourishment you'll be experiencing, the possible failure, etc., right? WRONG!

Here are 5 steps that will help you get through finals in a healthy and sane way:

1) Sleep, sleep, sleep!
Sleeping during finals is CRUCIAL. Contrary to popular belief, all-nighters are really not the way to go! Someone who is sleep deprived cannot focus (yes, this applies to all you Adderall addicts). If you continuously pull all-nighters during finals, you will be that person who ends up falling asleep during the test. Another important part about getting enough sleep is the fact that when you sleep your brain consolidates your memories, which is essential for learning new info.

2) Make sure you eat!
Eating is also super important. Your brain needs fuel to keep going and perform well. Word has it that protein is one of the most important nutrients for your brain. However, according to some studies, these are some of the foods you should eat specifically for studying: healthy carbs, foods with vitamin B, omega 3 fatty-acids, and zinc. Carbs are important for maintaining energy and focus. Vitamin B provides you with more energy and helps transport more oxygen to your cells. Omega 3 helps you improve your reference-based memory and focus during complex learning processes. Lastly, zinc also helps with your memory, but most importantly, it helps you strengthen your immune system. We all know final season is the prime time for getting sick!

3) Organize your time
This is one of the key tips to be successful during finals. If you organize your time well and create a study schedule for yourself, studying will be so much easier and you won't have to pull all nighters. My suggestion is to begin to prepare for finals 1 week to a week and a half before your first exam. This allows you to gather all of your materials and create study guides before you start the real studying. Make sure that you're including your meal times and sleep into your schedule.

4) Positive Thinking = Success!
Your mind is a very powerful thing. Just as you create negative thoughts about how you're going to fail the class, and that you'll never be able to get a job...blah blah blah. Well, guess what? Positive thinking works too! If you put positive thoughts in your head while studying or right before you go into the test, I can't promise you'll do better, but I guarantee that you will feel more confident walking into that exam. Next time, instead of saying "FUCK, I'm about to fail this!" try saying "Alright, I got this!"

5) Don't stress out!
I know finals season can be really overwhelming, but if you start to panic, you'll freak yourself out and not do well. Stressing out is associated with those negative thoughts that you create in your head. The key is to remain calm and take everything one step at a time. Having a check list of things you want to accomplish on a daily basis might not be the worst idea! Set daily reasonable goals that you will accomplish by the end of the day.

If you already do all of these steps during finals, give yourself a pat on the back. You've really got college down! For those who don't, I encourage you to try it out during this finals season.

Happy Studying! And may the odds be ever in your favor....
